Cambridge, UK 10 October 2008 – Judge Business School, the Department of German and Dutch and Pembroke College at The University of Cambridge, are delighted to announce that Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck, the German Academy Award winning director of "The Lives of Others" will be making the inaugural annual Xchanging German Lecture at the School on Friday 10 October 2008, commencing at 1730hrs.
Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck will comment upon the influence of the real events that lie behind his debut film which addresses some of the totalitarian excesses of the former East German state. In particular the effect that the Stasi, the secret police, had in east Berlin on creativity and culture.
Sir Richard Dearlove, former Head of MI6 and Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge, will then respond, giving his insights into the issues and challenges that were encountered at that time.
The annual Xchanging German Lecture series, hosted at the School, is a new initiative jointly organized between Judge Business School, Cambridge University’s Department of German and Dutch and Pembroke College. Commenting, Professor Arnoud De Meyer, Director, Judge Business School, said: "This lecture series is a clear example of the strength of the collaborative ethos which lies behind an increasing number of forward-thinking initiatives emerging from collegiate Cambridge."
Sponsored by Xchanging, the global business processing company, the open lectures will run over the next five years and will consider the intersection between cultural themes and business.
David Andrews, CEO and founder of Xchanging, and a William Pitt Fellow of Pembroke College said: "It is not sufficient to simply talk about creativity. What is really impactful is to learn firsthand from the people who are at the forefront of their industries and those who have directly engaged with culture. This new series of lectures is a unique opportunity to interact with some of Germany’s most notable cultural icons."
Proposed potential future speakers may include the footballers Jürgen Klinsmann or Franz Beckenbauer, politician Gerhard Schröder, artists such as Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter, philosopher Jürgen Haberman and best-selling author and lawyer Bernhard Schlink.

Pembroke College, founded in 1347 by Marie de St Pol, Countess of Pembroke, is the third oldest of the Cambridge colleges and the first to have its own Chapel. Despite being located in the middle of the city, Pembroke presents a tranquil environment with varied architectural styles framing open courts and beautiful gardens.
