"This historic event captures the extremes of emotion that follow success and failure in sport and business - unbridled elation or bitter disappointment" David Andrews.

A Boat Race squad begins the season (September) at around 30-40 strong, depending on the year. This is generally cut back to a core squad of around 24 by winter training camp (late December or early January). This squad of 24 usually comprises 20 rowers and four coxwains. 18 seats are up for grabs at each university (2 coxing seats and 16 rowing seats) as both Oxford and Cambridge boat a Blue Boat and a reserve boat on Boat Race day. The names below are both the rowers and coxes trialing as of Trial Eights in December 2008. They will be competing for the seats mentioned. Those who do not make the Blue Boat or reserve boat may be in a spare pair or four which may be called on in case of illness or injury leading up to or on Boat Race day on the 29th March 2009.
This year Oxford has a squad featuring 11 different nationalities competing for seats in the 2009 Race. There are eight from the USA and seven from Britain, two from Germany, along with individuals from Australia, Canada, Croatia, France, Holland, Ireland, New Zealand and Poland. There are also several Internationals and Olympians in the squad due it being a post Olympic year.
Two-thirds of the Cambridge squad is made up of British rowers and coxes (15), with the addition of five Americans, two Canadians and an Australian. Despite being less experienced on paper, Cambridge crews did well against their rivals, Oxford, in the annual Fours Head race on the Tideway course in early November.
